2014 U21 Awards Granted
We are pleased to announce the recipients of the 2014 U21 Awards for Internationalisation, recognising individual efforts which further internationalisation and build relations between U21 members. The 2014 awardees are Professor Martyn Poliakoff of the University of Nottingham and Professor James Mudoch of the University of Glasgow. Professor Poliakoff’s award is for his long and distinguished career in academe, but most notably for finding innovative ways to popularise science around the world. Professor Murdoch was nominated on the strength of his pioneering teaching of human rights law in an international context. The awards will be presented at a special ceremony in May 2014 as part of U21’s Annual Presidential Meeting, being held at the University of Glasgow. U21 3MT Winners Announced
Three individuals have been awarded prizes following the network’s first annual Three Minute Thesis Competition. First developed by the University of Queensland in 2008, the Three Minute Thesis (3MT®) challenges doctoral students to communicate the significance of their research to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes. 17Universitas 21universities ran local competitions, the winners of which competed in the final that was held virtually. Each candidate was asked to prepare a video of their presentation, which was put online for judgement by both a panel of experts and also by the general public.

- People’s Choice - Lindsey Brinton of University of Virginia

U21 Summer School 2014 Details Online
The 2014 U21 Summer School will run from 2-17 July and will be hosted by UNSW Australia. The theme of the Summer School will be:Shaping the Future City. Each U21 institution will carry out their own internal application process and subsequently members are invited to nominate five undergraduate students and two faculty/staff members to participate in the Summer School. 2014 Social Entrepreneur Corps programme Overview
Following two successful years of the Social Entrepreneur Corps programme (SEC), the University of Connecticut has announced plans to run the event again in 2014. The programme is based in Guatemala and allows students interested in international development to work directly with Social Entrepreneur Corps field professionals and social entrepreneurs to help establish new and grow existing micro-consignment supported businesses. The 2014 programme will run from 26 May – 18 July and is divided into pre-arrival preparation in a virtual classroom, followed by in-country orientation and field work. A further update regarding this programme, with details of how to apply and the timeline for registrations will be available later in the year. First Global Citizenship Workshop Announced
The inaugural Global Citizenship workshop will be held at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus from 13-14 March 2014. This workshop will explore our current understanding and approach towards promoting Global Citizenship within the student body, and specifically address the question of how a global university network can develop activities that support partner organisations in enhancing student engagement with an understanding of Global Citizenship. Deputy Vice Chancellor leaves Queensland
The Deputy Vice Chancellor (International) of Queensland, Dr Anna Ciccarelli, retired from her role on 1 November 2013. Professor Peter Høj, Vice-Chancellor and President at the University of Queensland, said of Dr Ciccarelli’s contribution:“during Anna's term as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International), she has formulated an outward looking Global Strategy with priority countries and regions for the university and has brought a comprehensive approach to internationalisation across learning, discovery and engagement at UQ. “ On behalf of all at U21 we would like to wish Dr Cicarelli well for the future. Queensland’s U21 Manager, Andrew Everett, has been appointed as acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (International) while a long-term replacement is recruited.

Edinburgh Scientist Wins Nobel Prize
Professor Peter Higgs of the University of Edinburgh has been awarded the 2013 Nobel prize in physics for his work in developing the Higgs boson theory along with Professor Francois Englert of the Université libre de Bruxelles in Belgium, with whom he shares the prize. Professor Higgs said of the prize“I am overwhelmed to receive this award and thank the Royal Swedish Academy… I hope this recognition of fundamental science will help raise awareness of the value of blue-sky research." We would like to congratulate Professor Higgs and the University of Edinburgh on this outstanding achievement.
McGill and UBC Take Top Spots in Maclean Canadian Rankings
McGill and UBC have achieved first and second place, respectively, in the Medical Doctoral category of the 2014 Maclean’s University Rankings, maintaining their placements in the 2013 rankings. The rankings place Canadian universities into one of three categories to recognise differences in levels of research funding, diversity of offerings and breadth and depth of graduate and professional programmes. Universities in the Medical Doctoral category, have a broad range of PhD programmes and research, as well as medical schools.
