The U21 Health Sciences Group is pleased to announce that it will award one U21 United National Millennium Development Goal (UNMDG)  scholarship to a PhD student from a U21 university to conduct research studies for a period of six months in 2012 (June 1 to December 1).

U21 wishes to attract outstanding PhD students pursuing a career in academia or development collaboration. The scholarship aims at increasing their previously gained scientific knowledge and skills relevant to global health related issues. The successful candidate will receive a scholarship for conducting PhD thesis related research studies, thereby adding value to the PhD thesis and contributing to the mission and objectives of the U21 Health Sciences Group and U21 UNMDG initiative. The successful candidate will work from his/her home university, under the supervision of two research staff in U21 universities and conduct a specific research project contributing to the mission of the U21 UNMDG initiative and relevant for her/his PhD thesis.

The U21 UNMDG initiative started in 2006, when a U21 Health Sciences UNMDG interest group was formed to work on the development of a blueprint for U21 Health Sciences to create an educational strategy for UNMDG training for academic institutions in the U21 network. In 2008, the U21 Health Sciences UNMDG Interest Group created a declaration stating their common interest in contributing to the attainment of the UNMDG goals and targets through education, knowledge translation, research, and partnership in relevant disciplines with communities, governments, and organizations. Between 2008 and 2011, the group worked collaboratively on

  1. Developing UNMDG case studies;
  2. Establishing an overall evaluation framework for the initiative;
  3. Improving communication to both students and faculty members, as well as dissemination;
  4. Piloting UNMDG case study sessions in selected U21 universities.
