Health Sciences Group: Student programmes2024

Interprofessional Education Student Challenge

2024’s U21 HSG IPE Student Challenge ran between May to July. Participants from across the network were grouped together in teams, across time zones and countries, to address the theme for this year’s student challenge: Health, Data and Climate: Looking for Solutions in Health Care.

Over five weeks, through research and international collaboration, the groups provided recommendations and captured their output in a short video.

I learned that climate change has its effects deeply rooted within carbon emissions from all industries and the healthcare industry is not spared from this. I also acknowledged through the teamwork exercise that diversity breeds brilliant ideas and is essential in producing innovative solutions to the climate change crisis.”

Student from The University of Sydney

I learnt that evidence-based practice is essential to accommodate climate change and try to decelerate it. Furthermore, I learnt to allow space for new ideas in the healthcare system, collaborate more and communicate effectively.”

40 medical students from 11 institutions took part in the annual U21 HSG summer school, held at the School of Public Health, at Fudan University, Shanghai. The programme integrated theory and practice with field visits to frontline public health services in institutions alongside lectures and workshops.

2024 Global Learning Partnership

Group of students from HSG's 2024 Global Learning Partnership speaking with students in a classroom in Nepal.

The UN Sustainable Development Goals group, one of the project groups of U21 HSG, runs the Global Learning Partnership, a student placement experience focusing on implementation of the UNs SDGs, ensuring close collaboration between U21 and host country teams to develop global citizens of the future.

U21 HSG Students from a variety of health professions spent three weeks in Nepal, working with local students on a community health project. As well as learning about the SDGs in a real-life setting, they also developed awareness for intercultural learning, culminating in presentations made to the hospital director.

The Global Learning Partnership was an amazing opportunity for so many reasons! I met so many amazing people and learned a lot, for example about how NGO projects can work.”

Silje Kaltenborn Lund University

A truly transformative and immersive experience, the Global Learning Programme has helped me push my personal and professional boundaries working in multidisciplinary health promotion within an international team. I was able to visualise how the SDGs can be integrated into my career as a future medical practitioner, whilst making lifelong friends from all around the globe.”
