The University of Melbourne

Located in Australia’s cultural capital and on the CBD’s doorstep, the University of Melbourne is a public research university that has championed premium education for over 160 years.

Consistently ranked as Australia’s leading university, our performance in independent international surveys reflects the University’s strong research performance, excellence in learning and teaching, and intellectual and social capital.

Melbourne offers broad undergraduate degrees and world-leading graduate programs, delivering diverse professional and scholarly disciplines to more than 50,000 students annually. Through its acclaimed curriculum, University of Melbourne students complete a broad and holistic undergraduate program which couples deep study in their field with subjects from outside their faculty, giving them the chance to explore a broad range of subjects and opportunities. Students then go on to complete a graduate professional degree, undertake a research higher degree or enter the job market.

The University has one of the most diverse cohorts of students with international students of 155 nationalities making up 41% of the student population. Melbourne also has one of the largest cohorts of graduate researchers in Australia with more than 20,000 PhD, research doctorate, masters by research and postgraduate coursework candidates.

The University’s researchers are at the forefront of international scholarship in fields as diverse as human rights law, telecommunications, climate change and medical research. Melbourne scholars of international renown include Nobel Laureate Professor Peter Doherty and alumna and Nobel Laureate Professor Elizabeth Blackburn. Our scientists at The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity – a joint venture between the University of Melbourne and the Royal Melbourne Hospital - successfully grew the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19), providing expert international laboratories with crucial information to help combat the virus.

The recently completed Melbourne Connect brings together the digital expertise of industry leaders and the University of Melbourne under one roof. Powered by the University of Melbourne in partnership with a consortium led by Lendlease, Melbourne Connect is Australia’s newest purpose-built innovation precinct. The people, place and programs at Melbourne Connect are designed to help researchers, start-ups, industry, government, corporates, higher degree students, and the community unlock digitally driven, data-enabled and socially responsible solutions to our most pressing challenges. The precinct will draw upon the University’s expertise in emerging technologies including robotics, computer science, and cyber security.

A priority of the University is to advance reconciliation and reciprocal learning with Indigenous peoples and communities. Our Reconciliation Action Plan is an opportunity for Melbourne to support the University’s growing Indigenous community, while promoting the importance of Indigenous cultural recognition in educational institutions. The University also contributes to Australia’s cultural dynamism through programs such as the Melbourne Theatre Company, Melbourne University Publishing, the Ian Potter Museum of Art and Asialink.

A commitment to internationalisation, is central to the University’s strategic vision. The University collaborates with strategic partners to become a hub of knowledge, lead on global challenges, and strengthen curriculum with global perspectives.
