A special event held to celebrate ten years of the strategic partnership between UNSW Sydney and Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) was one of the successful projects which has been funded by U21's 21st Anniversary Funding.
The event was held on 20 February 2019 in the Sydney Chinese Garden of Friendship and hosted by Professor Ian Jacobs, President and Vice-Chancellor of UNSW and Professor Xu Xuemin, Vice President (Education and International) of SJTU. It was attended by 150 guests from government, research, academia, business and local community. Gifts were exchanged and a special video documentary was produced to showcase major milestones of this important partnership of the past decade.
UNSW planned a three days programme for Professor Xu and the eight delegates from SJTU during their stay in Sydney, including participation of the Times Higher Education Research Excellence Summit Asia Pacific and meetings with the senior leadership team at UNSW to share best practice and discuss ways to deepen this partnership.
This project provided an opportunity for both UNSW and SJTU to review and reflect on their ten-year strategic partnership, and brainstorm what the future of this partnership should look like. It was also a great opportunity to acknowledge people who contributed significantly to promote this partnership. Through the celebration event and meetings throughout the three-day program, the two institutions have agreed to focus future developments on:
- Increase student mobility between the two institutions
- Promote existing articulation programmess, double degrees and student exchange by organising a half day visit to SJTU in 2019 by UNSW faculty members
- Potential Go8 and C9 “China Australia Student Innovation Alliance” lead by UNSW and SJTU
- Two-way student entrepreneur exchange
- Explore collaboration in Humanities
The event highlighted the achievements of this strategic partnership and UNSW’s commitment to developing similar relationships with other U21 members in the future.
