Making a positive change at UConn

Jessica Gagnon was determined to make the most of every opportunity on offer at the University of Connecticut. Read below about how her determination to make a difference in the local community has changed her global outlook:

When I first came to UConn, I was looking for a way to get involved and create a sense of community for myself within such a large university. I got involved in the Honors Program, teaching a class and eventually working in the Honors Programming and Events Office coaching first year students. I also joined UConnPIRG, a student run advocacy organization that allows students to make a difference on real issues—from increasing civic engagement and voter turnout on my campus, to getting $5 million in the federal budget towards open educational resources that make textbooks free or cheaper for college students across the country.

My co-curricular experiences have absolutely defined my experience at UConn. I feel like I’ve learned so much more through my work and volunteer experiences than can be taught in a classroom—from learning how to talk to administrators, to running big events and traveling around the region for trainings and conferences. By getting involved in co-curriculars, I’ve become more aware of what the world is really like, and I’ve gained confidence in my own abilities to take on new responsibilities and jump into any opportunities that come my way. These experiences have shaped me down to my core, by exposing me to so many new ideas that I could never have imagined before. They have helped me create a more clear vision of the person I want to be, within my career and my personal life.

While there have definitely been moments where it was difficult to balance my academics, two jobs, and my volunteer work, it is beyond worth it. I have learned so much more than I ever thought I would in college, and I’ve surrounded myself with a group of passionate activists who share my desire to make a positive change in the world.
