U21’s Commitment to the UN Sustainable Development Goals

U21 has Consultative Status with the Economic & Social Affairs Council (ECOSOC). We plan to use this position to engage more proactively with the UN, especially with regards to its work to achieve the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals by 2030 - #Envision2030 

UN Sustainable Development Goals

The Executive Committee of U21 has given its support to the proposal that U21 focus on supporting SDG numbers four and seventeen in particular:

Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all

Goal 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development

Trudie McGuinness, U21’s Director of Strategy, Planning & Operations spent two days at the UN Climate Change Summit in September 2019. During the two days of Coalition Meetings, she attended the following sessions of the UN:

Youth Climate Summit

  • Opening Session with the UN Secretary General: Young People at the Frontlines
  • Summer of Solutions: Young Entrepreneurs Pitch Competition
  • Greta Thunberg spoke alongside António Guterres, UN SecretaryGeneral at the Youth Climate Summit. The SecretaryGeneral said that he wants his “granddaughters to live in a world that is liveable” and expressed complete commitment to Climate Action on Climate Change  

Social and Political Drivers

  • Cultural Heritage Partnership to Enable Ambitious Climate Action
  • Professor Jeffery Sachs warned that climate change presents not only economic and social adversity, but potential catastrophe for humanity
  • UNESCO wants to see an increase in ‘climate literacy’ and the vital role that education must play in educating the young as well as training adults to keep improving their understanding of what leads to climate change
