Established in 1997, U21 has a deep commitment to connecting people across borders and diverse cultures. The addition of UGM represents the increasing focus of the network on broadening geographic representation within the membership. The network now comprises 29 research-led institutions in 21 countries across the globe. Members collaborate, exchange knowledge and work together on an array of projects across educational innovation, student experience and researcher engagement.

Outlining their acceptance into the U21 network, Professor Dr. Emilia Ova, Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada, said: We are thrilled to be a part of the U21 network this year. The mission of U21 aligns with our aim to play a significant role in addressing the greatest challenges facing the globe through long-term collaboration and advocacy. With regard to our contribution to U21, I believe that UGM, as a new member of the network, can share best practices for enhancing the global contribution of higher education to the community and play a significant role in the field."

Professor Jenny Dixon, Provost of U21 commented: “One of the strong features of U21 is sharing best practice across our membership. Universitas Gadjah Mada brings an exciting new dimension to the network, including its internationally recognised community service programme for all its undergraduate students, shaping young leaders of the future.  We look forward very much to engaging with UGM and embracing the knowledge and perspectives they bring as a highly populated diverse country in Southeast Asia."

Professor Shearer West, Chair of U21, said:“I am delighted to welcome Universitas Gadjah Mada as a new member of the Universitas 21 network, particularly considering our shared values and focus on sustainability and collaboration.
