U21 Award Winners: John's Journey of Educational Change in Zambia

As the founder of the Chiparamba Trust, John's inspiring efforts have transformed the lives of thousands in Zambia. U21 delves into John's remarkable journey, highlighting his dedication to education, sustainable development, and empowering others.

John's transformative journey began when he was awarded a prestigious Chevening Scholarship to pursue his MSc in Young People, Social Inclusion, and Change at the University of Glasgow in 2016. This opportunity armed him with the skills and knowledge necessary to address the education challengesĀ in his home country, Zambia.

Drawing on the networks and skills he built during his studies, John has remained connected with alumni, promoting the concept of volunteerism among his networks and leveraging these connections to benefit young people. The vision and foresight shown by John in bringing the Chiparamba Trust to life hugely impressed U21's panel of Senior Leaders, who voted for John to win the Alumni category of the inaugural Leaders of the Future Awards, set up to recognise current students and recent graduates empowering others and creating positive change in international higher education.

Breaking Down Barriers

Recognizing the urgent need for accessible education, John focused on helping to developĀ the infrastructures that support educational delivery in rural areas. By constructing schools and training educators, he created opportunities for over 5,000 children who previously had no access to education. Through these initiatives, youth in rural areas are now able to engage in tailor-made programs, in subjects such as carpentry and agriculture, equipping them with vital skills to support their families and communities.

An Holistic Approach

John's dedication extends beyond formal education. He and his team have actively engaged with orphanages, churches, and other organizations in Zambia to offer life-skills training to a wide range of individuals, including youths, women, orphans, the elderly, the disabled, and the vulnerable. By empowering these communities, John promotes sustainable livelihoods, climate-smart farming techniques, and adaptation to a changing environment.

Tackling Real Issues

One of the most remarkable aspects of John's work is his commitment to addressing pressing issues that affect disadvantaged individuals. Through his programs, he tackles challenges such as teenage pregnancy, illiteracy, and youth disengagement head-on. By providing essential resources and support, John ensures that these individuals have the tools and knowledge to overcome obstacles and create a better future for themselves.

A Scholarly Pursuit

Driven by a thirst for knowledge and a desire to make a greater impact, John is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Education Research at the University of East Anglia, thanks to the Commonwealth Scholarship. His research focus lies in exploring literacy strategies for rural women to enhance sustainable development. This scholarly pursuit reflects John's unwavering dedication to finding innovative solutions and driving positive change at a systemic level.
