    We are pleased to announce the opening of the 2021 U21/PwC Innovation Challenge. Now in it’s third year, the competition supports and prepares U21 graduate students for the world of work by allowing them to consider and respond to real global challenges.

    Despite the challenges that we have all faced this year, it has been inspirational to be able to able to celebrate the ingenuity and resourcefulness of all of our U21 colleagues.  A judging panel, comprised of the U21 Provost and representatives from U21 universities without an individual in the competition, reviewed all the shortlisted applications. We can now reveal the 2020 Overall U21 Champion in the time of COVID is Andrea Strachan of the University of Queensland.

    U21 is delighted to publish it's first online, video-rich publication of the Impact Report, covering activities undertaken in 2020.

    In 2020, U21 funded over 40 collaborative cross-member projects and offered real-time virtual global educational and training opportunities to over 1,500 students and 200 staff, the majority of whom had never attended a U21 network event before.

  • Prof Bairbre Redmond_Provost 2016-2020

    On the 31st January 2021, Professor Bairbre Redmond will complete her tenure as U21 Provost and hand over to her successor, Professor Jenny Dixon from the University of Auckland. Bairbre was formally Professor of Higher Education, Dean of Undergraduate Students and Deputy Registrar at University College Dublin and joined U21 in October 2016 as its first Provost.

    A Community of Practice was formed in May 2020 to support those senior university officers who had charge of managing/reopening the U21 campuses across the world after the first lock-down and closures as part of the Covid-19 outbreak.  At that time members were at different stages of reopening/extending the use of their university campuses and at different points in their academic calendars, and any plans were strongly influenced by national health and safety regulations.

    Professor James Ward’s commitment to protecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities is somewhat outlined in the following, he has been a key advisor to the Australian Government and other key agencies on preparedness response and recovery phases to prevent a catastrophe occurring in Indigenous communities nationally.

    The COVID-19 Data Analytics team, led by Dr Clare Hourigan, collaborated to provide timely and relevant data to inform UQ's strategic and operational response to the COVID-19 crisis. The informal structure of the team exemplifies respect, diversity and the 'One UQ' ethos.

    On Thursday 3 December, 30 representatives from 19 universities, across the U21 Network came together for a virtual Global Mobility Group meeting. This year all universities in the U21 network have had to rapidly pivot and innovate to continue to offer global opportunities to their students and staff. Participants shared how they have risen to this challenge and supported each other this year to continue to connect with students, staff and partners in the mobility sphere.

    In the same week that U21’s University of Glasgow won ‘University of the Year’ based on the institution’s response to its historical links with the slave trade which included a pledge to spend £20 million in reparations, a cohort of early career researchers (ECRs) from across the network were brought together at the U21 Early Career Researcher Workshop to tackle challenges in ‘Modern Slavery, Forced Labour and Human Trafficking’.

    As part of the Researcher Resilience Fund Project: Thriving in a Post COVID age, University of Maryland and University of Birmingham have developed  the "Health Research Exchange (HREx)” platform emphasizing diversity, inclusivity, and culturally sensitive evidencebased research mentorship and professional development. It is due for launch in 2021 and will strengthen the Universitas 21’s newly launched “U21 Community” e-learning platform which provides space for staff and students from across U21 universities to network through focused content in a virtual environment.
